I raised my son as best I knew at the time.   I always gravitated to the basic things my mom had demonstrated to me.  It was not only what she taught me, it is what I observed through her actions.

Basic things I learned:

Sick, we stayed home from school, she made homemade soup, cinnamon buns, gave us mustard baths on our feet and put on wool socks so we could sweat it out!!

Headache, no problem.  Drink more water.

Earache, use garlic.  Garlic was the answer for alot.

Stomache ache, she had it handled.. peppermint on the tongue, peppermint tea and sauerkraut for dinner.

Alot of things have changed since then and I have certainly learned a whole lot more.

I raised my son with organic home cooked food.  I used natural remedies, essential oils, healthy supplements,  nutrient infusions such as Ningxia Red to keep him healthy.  Still,  I was not aware of the dangers of putting chemical laden products on his body.   I used cloth diapers, breast fed, prepared all his baby food (organically) yet still, I did not make the connection to the dangers of what I was placing on his body.

I actually never even thought about absorption.

Skin absorption is a route by which substances can enter the body through the skin. Along with inhalation, ingestion and injection, dermal absorption is a route of exposure for toxic substances and route of administration for medication.

The best way to assist our children grow strong healthy body’s is to pay attention to what we feed them, and to what we place on their skin or expose them to.

Our Seedlings Line was created to give your baby the best products and at a great price, so you can have peace of mind.    All of our products in the Seedling Line are calming and soothing to baby. They are made with 100% naturally derived ingredients, including 100% pure essential oils. They are free of lanolin, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, animal derived ingredients, synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic colorants!!

Lanolin can be controversial, comes from sheep.   can cause allergic reactions, can be overdosed in larger volumes.

Parabens allow products to survive for months, even years, in our bathroom cabinet; however when you use these products, they can also enter your body through your skin.  There have been studies done in which traces of five parabens were found in the breast tissue of the majority of the women studied.  This doesn’t  prove that parabens can cause cancer but it does identify that the parabens were able to penetrate the skin and remain within tissue.

Parabens are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Too much oestrogen can trigger an increase in breast cell division and growth of tumours, which is why paraben use has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.  I don’t want to take that chance.

Phthalates (pronounced “thah-lates”) are chemical plasticizers that have been widely used since the 1950s to soften plastics that would otherwise be brittle and crack when bent. Because phthalates are not chemically bound to the plastics they’re added to, they’re continuously released into the air or food or liquid. Did you ever notice how plastic sometimes hardens over time? That’s because the phthalates have leached out of it.

Phthalates are found in an amazing array of products. In personal care items, they’re used to help lubricate other substances, help lotions penetrate and soften the skin, and help fragrances last longer. They are used in toys, electronics, car-care products, insecticides, adhesives, plastic wrap, plastic containers, flooring, furniture, wallpaper, shower curtains, and other things made of vinyl or PVC.  It is linked to a host of ailments, there are warnings for expectant mothers and excessive use in baby.  We can certainly see how it is everywhere and we really don’t need to take the chance by putting it on their skin!!

Petrochemicals will commonly be found on your ingredients list as propylene, ethylene, butadiene, benzene or xylene.  The majority of petrochemicals we use today are made from petroleum (the stuff we put in our car).

Petrochemicals are most comonly used to extend the shelf life of our cosmetics, and sometimes to “water down” or increase the spread-ability of a product.

They are also sometimes used to add and disperse fragrance throughout a product.

While there have been some claims that link petrochemicals to cancer and a myriad of other conditions and illnesses, this is still yet to be determined.  I don’t want to take that chance.

It is very common for petroleum derived ingredients to be irritating, sensitising, pore clogging and very drying on the skin, generally causing more damage than good.

Then we find synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic colorants.  Synthetics have been linked to a host of diseases and certainly do not belong on the skin of our tiny, precious babies.

There are a couple of ways to promote healthy skin. First, eating right means feeding your skin nutrients and antioxidants.

Second, you should be careful with what you apply on the skin. Take extra caution in choosing what you apply to your skin topically. Your skin is highly permeable and can easily absorb whatever it touches.

Mom’s have more information readily available to them today but I still find alot are not paying really close attention to what they are placing on the skin, on the hair and in the bath!!!

You are going to love Seedlings!!
